Formerly The Domain apartments, Lotus Tower is a unique 20-storey apartment building located within easy walking distance of the Brisbane River, South Bank and the Brisbane CBD. With over 200 apartments and 3 basement levels, Lotus Tower is a truly modern, luxury residential building with high expectations of functionality. Switchboard Innovations completed the switchboard design and and constructed the 1250A Main Switchboard, 19 meter panels and 200 unit load centres, in addition to one community distribution board.

This project was the second stage to complete works at Ormeau Woods State High School. EDSS delivered full electrical contracting services — fire, data and security, communications, CCTV, light and power — to assist in the completion of the Sporting Hall, Manual Arts Block, Science Block, Home Economics Block, Teacher’s Staff Block, Amenities and Undercover Area. Working to a tight schedule, this project was successfully completed under budget and within the time frame given by Matrix, with whom we developed great working relationships.

Domain Varsity Rise is a contemporary, multi-level residence built with the need for a peaceful, yet community-integrated, lifestyle in mind for its residents. The  80 low-care and 40 high-care places include Dementia-specific and special-needs care options, in one of the Gold Coast’s most sought-after residential areas at Varsity Lakes. Our ability to supply all of the required electrical contracting services — including, electrical installation, submain cabling, power installation, lighting, communication and MATV System — enabled EDSS to be the successful tenderer.

Cinc Whelan Electrical recently completed a critical infrastructure project, the Warner Temporary Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) installation, in partnership with Shadforth for Unitywater. This six-month, $200,000 project is a key example of our expertise in delivering tailored electrical solutions for large-scale infrastructure needs.

Challenges and Solutions

Installing a pressure relief valve system in an active residential area posed a unique set of challenges. Ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding communities and meeting stringent environmental and safety standards was a top priority. Leveraging our experience in water and wastewater infrastructure, Cinc Whelan Electrical adopted a streamlined approach to planning and execution, allowing for efficient installation within tight deadlines.

The underground flow meter installation and remote monitoring system further enhanced the project’s value, providing Unitywater with real-time data access and control without the need for on-site management, an essential feature for large-scale water networks.

Technical Implementation

The successful execution of the Warner Temporary PRV project highlights our team’s comprehensive capabilities:

Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) Installation: A critical component to regulate pressure in water pipelines, preventing potential damage.

Custom-Built Cabinet: Designed to house and protect the PRV, ensuring durability and easy access for maintenance.

The Newport Boat Lock included pumps, gearboxes, actuators, switchboard, alarm system, access control, laptop control, pedestrian lights, obstruction detection, traffic monitor, live video, PLC and HMI with remote communication. Oh, and we were a finalist for the Master Electricians National Excellence Award – Industrial Project of the Year.

Whelan was commissioned to provide the Variable Speed Drives for the “Tsunami”, the second stage of the water park at Victoria’s largest theme park – Adventure Park. Installing Schneider Altivar VSDs, allowed for superb control of the KSB Pumps in this incredible 7.5-storey, 172m long, triple-funnel waterslide, with raging water, large waves and swirling rips.

The large central Sewage Pump Station is now complete and ready for the new Maroochydore Suncentral CBD to be developed.

Over two contracts, our Company completed all of the mechanical / electrical, switchboards, variable speed drives, odour control, MHL tanks, dosing, plumbing and telemetry works.

Whelan Electrical Services installed the complete lighting and electrical works for the new Maroochy Shire Council Multisports Complex at Fishermans Road Maroochydore. 

The project consisted of :-

Client: Civil Contractors Location: Brisbane Airport, QLD Project value: $550,000.00 Contract period: 24 Weeks Completion date: September 2011

Export Park is a 90-hectare precinct, ideally located to facilitate air cargo operations. It was designed as a corporate office park, catering for the individual functions associated with Cargo Terminal Operators, Freight Forwarders and Warehouse Distribution networks. Underground Power was contracted to provide infrastructure development and laid over 11,000 meters of conduit.

A specialist under-road borer was also utilised during the project to bore two 600mm diameter under bores — that contained 8 conduits — for a length of 40m underneath existing roadway and swale drain.

Client: Hopscotch Projects Pty Ltd Location: Sunshine Coast, QLD Project value: $250,126.00 Contract period: 6 Weeks Completion date: September 2011

As this is a working shopping centre, close attention and seamless planning was required to ensure that the works had minimal impact on normal operations. Generators were provided to ensure that no interruptions were experienced by tenants during the commissioning of the new transformers, while creating the new cinema. Underground Power provided Energex C&I conduits, HV cable pit to Energex specification, dual 1000kVA pad-mounted transformers, termination and joints earthing consumer conduits and HV & LV cabling.

An integral part of Brisbane City’s architectural framework, the historic Queensland Parliament House, recently underwent a substantial enhancement in its electrical infrastructure. EDSS, in synergistic collaboration with Switchboard Innovations, navigated through an elaborate 18-month project to refresh and technologically advance its electrical bedrock, under a project vested by QLD Parliamentary Services. This venture, valued at a robust $3.8 million, stretched across four intricately planned stages, articulating a perfect amalgam of historical reverence, innovative technology, and infrastructural expertise.

Client: Department of Defence Location: Amberley, QLD Project value: $58,789.00 Contract period: 6 Months Completion date: September 2011

RAAF Base Amberley has a facility called Engine Test Cell 1 (ETC1) which is used to test aircraft jet engines. ETC1 has an associated Defence Fuel Installation (ETC1-DFI), which supplies fuel for engine testing. The ETC1 upgrade enables the testing of Pratt & Whitney F135 engines for the F-35 and retains the ability to test the General Electric F414 engines for the F/A-18 Super Hornets. Switchboard Innovations were engaged to complete a scope of works around design and documentation, project management and supervision, and supply and delivery of the Main Switch Board (MSB).
